Great Valley of Laughter by Diksha

Writing Prompt: An elderly couple spends all their money on lottery tickets, and their three grown children canโ€™t agree on what to do with them.

Once in the city of ‘great valley of laugher’ there lived an elderly couple and their three grown children. They always spent a good amount of quality time together and had never fought. On a fine day or so, the elderly couple were passing in the market and found a lottery stall, and they wanted to try their luck but were also scared about whether they would win or lose so they had a plan for buying all the lottery tickets but didn’t have enough money, so they brought a lottery ticket and spent all their money on that.

They went home happily to share this with their children and to see their reactions.

 “What???” screamed Riya.

“All our money is spent!” Santhosh raised his voice in anger.

“Wait, Wait, don’t scream!” said Maria.

Riya said, “What do you mean by โ€˜Donโ€™t screamโ€™, are you even understanding that they spent all money!โ€

โ€œExactly!โ€ Santhosh said, “And now we have nothing! Not even a penny!โ€

Maria said, โ€œWait!โ€

Seeing all this, the elderly couple was upset that their kids were having a fight, and tears rolled down their cheeks.

Maria saw everything and ran to their parents and consoled them and said, “Don’t worry, now we will go to the lottery shop and give this ticket back to them and get our money back.โ€

Riya and Santhosh finally understood that screaming and shouting wouldnโ€™t help and what Maria said was the only option. They went to the shop but found it closed and now they didn’t know what to do.

Santosh said, “It’s fine, we will wait here till the shop opens and then we will exchange the ticket for money.โ€

They waited the whole night near the shop.

Finally, when it was 6 a.m. in the morning, there was a newspaper kept on the desk. Riya took it and read it, and screamed in happiness and checked the lottery a hundred times and said to her family, โ€œWow! We have won the lottery!โ€

He used to earn 50000 per month. The boy used to use 20000 and the remaining he would put into a bank account which was secretly maintained.

The son once said to his mother, โ€œCome, let’s go shopping.โ€

One fine day, his mother got a phone call and when she picked up, a man said, “Unfortunately, your son has met with an accident, please come and meet the doctor soon.โ€

His mother cut the call and went to the cupboard. When she was searching for the health report, she found a bank book of her son. She found millions of money in her teenage son’s bank book.

She told the bank, โ€œI am his mother, he has met with an accident, can you give me some amount of money?โ€

The bank gives her money. She rushes to the hospital and pays the doctor. After the treatment, she brings her son back home.

She tells him, “My dear son, sorry for taking money from your bank book which I found in the cupboard”.

The son replied, “It’s okay Maa, and I am sorry for not sharing with you about my bank book.โ€

His mother said “It’s alright,” and hugged him tightly.

Once there lived a couple in the small city of Bangalore. After a few years, they had three children. The couple would always enjoy their life and spend all of their money on lottery tickets. The children said that as they were children, they should go to school.

Once the third child said, “Daddy and Mummy, we have to go to school. You never made us join school but instead were having a great time”.

Their father replied angrily, “Who are you to correct us?โ€

The children didn’t know what to do and they all left the decision to their parents. Once the mother realized their mistake, she spoke to her husband and corrected him. The husband understood his mistake.

The mom and dad went to the children and said, “Sorry, my children we will stop this, and educate you and make you happy”.

The children replied, “Thank you Daddy and Mummy!” and hugged them. They all lived happily lifelong.

Having you is the best feeling ever.
But let me remind you – Don’t make it a memory forever.

It was you who was there in the time of trouble.
It was you who taught me how to smile.
It was you who taught me how to win the hardships of the century.

King of the days that were left alone, and your heart
had to wear this alone and I was your princess.

One Year Update: My Journey with Speak Up! Act Now

It has been a transformative year since the launch of Speak Up! Act Now!, and I am deeply grateful for the journey that has unfolded. What began as a simple idea to empower voices and raise awareness has blossomed into a movement that is making a lasting impact on countless lives.

Dedication to Inclusivity and Action

In the past year, my commitment to social action and youth empowerment has only grown stronger. Speak Up! Act Now! continues to make waves by encouraging young students to express themselves, fostering environmental consciousness, and nurturing leadership skills.

We have launched a new initiative called ‘The Wonder Capsule,’ which aims at empowering students from underprivileged and underserved communities via English Language sessions.

A Vision for Change

My journey began with a commitment to ensuring that my community embraced the United Nationsโ€™ Impactful Actions, leading by example, and raising environmental awareness through regular sessions. I was only motivated to work further when in 2021, I won the United Nationsโ€™ School Champs for Climate Action award.

Overcoming Challenges

This journey has not been without its challenges. Balancing my rigorous academic schedule and extracurricular activities with my social action commitments has required discipline and perseverance. There have been times when I’ve faced dismissive attitudes, particularly when advocating for girls’ education in certain communities. Yet, these experiences have only fueled my determination. I’ve incorporated these challenges into my workshops and learning materials, using them as opportunities to address the issues head-on.

Looking Forward

As I reflect on the past year, I am filled with hope and determination. Speak Up! Act Now! is more than just an organization; it is a movement that is empowering voices, nurturing hope, and leaving an indelible mark on hearts and minds. The impact we have madeโ€”reaching over 1,500 students and dedicating approximately 30,000 hours to content development and learningโ€”is a testament to the power of collective action.

The road ahead is long, but I am excited to continue this journey. With each step, I am reminded of our mission: to create a world where every voice matters and every action counts. I invite you all to join us in this mission, to speak up, act now, and be the change we wish to see in the world.
